To honour Canada Day for 2024, I updated the animation on My ASL Dictionary’s sign for Canada.
A Sentry from Ottawa’s Canadian Forces Ceremonial Guard shows the ASL hand sign for CANADA, including after the hand signs for our country’s age this year.
The A hand with thumb up (Canadian variant) taps the chest twice, referring to the Mountie ‘who always gets his man.’

Kanata is a reference to the origin of the country’s name.
During Jacques Cartier’s expeditions, the Huron-Iroquois word “Kanata” meaning “village” was mistranslated and recorded in his Journal as the name of the nation, Canada.
