FINISH LINE

Another Stop is the end of the Race. My ASL Dictionary has a Race Car Driver for the hand sign for Start, it made sense for a Racer to show the hand sign for Finish.
Smashing through Red Break Tape at the Race’s end, a 2014 cartoon of a young athlete with a painted number One on his face shows the ASL hand sign for FINISH.
5 Hands held up to the chest quickly twist forward as they are swung outward, like shaking off our hands when you’re done.

This post is also a correction to the Dictionary. While the Sign’s instructions are correct, the cartoon fails to show the starting position of the hands with the palms in. My Apologies for any confusion.

STOP SIGN

As shown in traffic lights and stop signs, it’s faster to glance at a picture than read a word, an essential for alerts for Construction, Danger, and Stop.
My ASL Dictionary has a 2015 cartoon of a Female British cop showing the ASL hand sign for STOP.
The Flat hand is brought down sharply on the opposite upturned palm like an abrupt stopping movement.

WITH THE FISHES

Today I took a bus to Toronto with my friends from the Village of Riverside Glen to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. It was incredible! After taking 65 pictures of the beautiful fish I requested my friend Dawn to take a short video of me using ASL. She wanted to film me in the Aquarium’s “Dangerous Lagoon”, but the tunnel was so dark it made me more like a black silhouette against the fish tank. After explaining how sign language is better in a bright room, she took the video before we left.

As you can see in the comparison to the photo, the bright entrance of Ripley’s Aquarium made my words easier to see. YouTube also allowed me to add subtitles to clear up any confusion about my exaggerated movements (EJM is my Art Name).

QUITTING TIME

After being introduced to American Sign Language in a High School Summer Course, it was years later, working at a bookstore with a deaf client, that I decided Never to Quit ASL.
For the sign for permanent leave, My ASL Dictionary has a Businessman in a disheveled suit showing the ASL hand sign for QUIT.
The H hand inside the opposite C hand pulls out to the side, a visual for getting out of a situation.
The Opposite of the ASL hand sign for JOIN and PARTICIPATE.

COMPUTERS

Computers have adapted to multiple shapes and sizes, similar to the several hand signs for this electronic device. My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of the security program Tron from the 1982 science fiction movie illustrating an ASL hand sign for COMPUTER. The still 2013 picture in the book uses blurs of blue light to show motion, while the animation illustrates more.

The C hand slides back and forth along the opposite forearm, or the C hand moves across the opposite forearm to arc back to repeat the motion.
In an informal variant, the thumb of the C hand is held to the forehead, moving the forearm back and forth.

BUILT LIKE A MACHINE

For the hand sign for Mechanical Devices, I wanted a character more exciting than a Mechanic in a dirty uniform. Inside My ASL Dictionary is a Gentleman dressed in a Futuristic Robot Costume illustrating the ASL hand sign for MACHINE.

Both clawed 5 hands interlock at the knuckles and shake up and down at the wrist like working gears locked together.
