CANADA DAY 2025

For Canada’s birthday this year, a cartoon of a Ceremonial Guard from My ASL Dictionary. The Guardsman illustrates both the hand signs for CANADA, BIRTHDAY, and AGE (maybe next year I’ll have him say Happy Birthday too).

BREAK THROUGH

The Road of Life leads through many hills, valleys, and caverns.
My ASL Dictionary features another cartoon of the artist, this time as a convention attendee in a Princess Mononoke costume. Wearing a red Wolf mask and fur cape, the Princess illustrates the ASL hand sign for THROUGH.

Move the Flat Hand through the middle and ring finger of the opposite hand, a visual representative of moving through something.

DIRECTIONS ON A MAP

With the Hand sign Art from My ASL Dictionary, this week will cover signs for directions often found on a Map, the charted representation of an area of land or sea.

To begin, a cartoon of the Cartographer from pages 47 and 144, holding a map in his left arm and wearing a jacket with a map print, fingerspells MAP.

Looking back, it would have been nice to have the character of MAPMAN fingerspell MAP, but he was busy showing the hand sign for COLLEGE, and later MOUSTACHE, PERFECT, PERFECTION, and PERFECTAMUNDO.

IN AND OUT OF KNIGHTS

Dressed in a suit of medieval plate armor on pages 79 and 106 of My ASL Dictionary, a cartoon of a Knight illustrates the similar ASL hand signs for IN and OUT.

The Flattened O hand is inserted into the opposite hand once for IN and twice for INSIDE. Reversing the motion to pull the O hand out once is the hand sign for OUT.

SUMMERTIDE

At 10:42 pm, Friday, June 20, the Summer Solstice begins with the longest day and shortest night. In celebration of this moment when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere, my ASL Dictionary’s hand sign for the Season.

With the sun behind him, a muscular beach hunk dressed for the waves in a retro bathing suit and sunglasses shows the ASL hand sign for SUMMER.

The ONE hand sign pulls the index finger across the brow into an X hand, like wiping the sweat off your brow on a hot summer day.
