In the spirit of April 26th’s HUG A FRIEND DAY, My ASL Dictionary’s hand sign for this friendly embrace. A cartoon of Mother Goose in her tall hat, known by legend for spinning tales for children and riding a flying goose, shows the ASL hand sign for HUG and EMBRACE.
S hands crossed at wrists are placed across the chest press firmly against the body, like hugging a loved one.

My ASL Dictionary’s Cat Burglar, now in his new Pink Panther disguise, shows off the ASL hand sign for STEAL.
V hand reaches alongside the opposite arm, then pulls back quickly into a bent V hand, like a crook snatching a purse.

THE ROYAL CITY OF GUELPH

This Tuesday, April 23, A Happy 197th Birthday to my hometown of Guelph, Ontario!
My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of the city’s founder, John Galt, in a jacket painted with the design of the city’s flag, illustrating the ASL hand sign for the City of GUELPH.
The G hand touches the chin then arcs down to the chest, under the shoulder, and over the heart.

GOD’S LIGHT

As Each Faith has a different title for the Supreme Creator of All, there are various hand signs for each Name. My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of Pope Francis illustrating one of the ASL hand signs for GOD. Extended B hand raised to a vertical position as thumb touches the temple then lowers to the chest, like a ray of God’s light beaming from the Heavens.

STRUGGLES

Unlike static Spoken Languages, Sign Language continues to grow and change within its community. This is why word updates to My ASL Dictionary are posted on its Author’s Site. Demonstrating this visual is my dictionary’s cartoon of a Cab Driver showing three different versions of the ASL hand sign for STRUGGLE. As his pained facial expression changes, the art signature on his yellow uniform shows the year the hand sign was taught.
2014 – Index fingers point to each other, simultaneously moving in small circles, like two opponents facing off.
2017 – Index fingers pointed to each other, simultaneously moving side to side like trying to wrestle free. 
2024 – Index fingers pointed to each other are forcefully thrust back and forth like attempting to break free of restraint.

AN EXPENSIVE LESSON

With My ASL Dictionary published, I continued illustrating ASL hand signs for my studies. A cartoon of King Midas, the Phrygia Monarch, who wished that anything he touched turn to Gold, shows the ASL hand sign for EXPENSIVE, COSTLY, and HIGH-PRICED.
The back of the Flat O hand is placed on the opposite palm, then lifts upward to arc down into a contracted 5 hand, like throwing away money.
