COOL CAT

With my current ASL course complete and a month until the next one, I can return to my notes to begin illustrating the hand signs taught. For this sign, I drew a cartoon of my NPC character, Jason Liu Sing. He played Malkin, a sidekick, close friend, and fiance for my OceanCity roleplaying group (maybe that’s why I like Miraculous’ Cat Noir). Dressed in his makeshift catsuit, he shows the ASL hand sign for NEAT (as in great, excellent, and fine). Depending on Context, the sign can also mean Terrific, Wonderful, Great, Swell, and even Convenient. The thumb of 5 hand rests under the shoulder as the fingertips wiggle (a similar motion to the Cool hand sign)
Malkin’s original black gloves also had to be redesigned with white paws to make his fingertips visible.

FOX HUNT

The final presentation for my ASL class is the children’s story, “One Fine Day. It is a cute narrative about a Fox seeking redemption to get his tail back after being caught stealing milk. To prepare, I’ve animated my Dictionary’s ASL hand sign for Fox. Created in 2014, a cute fox hunter (his uniform being the only thing I like about the sport) illustrates the ASL hand sign for FOX. The F hand twists in front of the nose twice to represent the small nose of this clever bushy-tailed canine. #ASL #signlanguage #fox #cartoon #myasldictionary

RAIN SHOWER

Today I was caught in a heavy downpour that inspired me to post my Dictionary’s ASL hand sign for RAIN. The character is another cartoon of me posed with a drenched Autumn coat and Remembrance Day Poppy. Illustrated November 2013, this picture remembers the night I waited an hour in the rain after a canceled ASL class for the bus home. The 5 hands move downward in front of the shoulders twice for the fingertips to mimic the falling raindrops. #ASL #signlanguage #rain #cartoon #myasldictionary

AMERICA

For Independence Day and America’s 247th birthday, my Dictionary’s cartoon of Uncle Sam animating the ASL hand signs for the US and America. The locked fingers represent both the log cabins of the new country and its states united.

KANATA

HAPPY CANADA DAY
As I did last year, the animated ASL hand sign for CANADA. Updated to celebrate Canada’s 156th birthday, my book’s cartoon of a Canadian Forces Ceremonial Guard Sentry. The A hand (with extended thumb) taps the upper chest twice, like a salute to the Mountie who always gets his man. I also added a quick glimpse of Kanata, the Iroquois name for the Village, and inspiration for our country’s name. Hopefully, by next year, I can add the Plains Sign Language hand sign for Village.
