SPRING BACK

While preparing the post for my dictionary’s hand sign for Autumn, I noticed the animation for Spring was unfinished. Back in March, it was skipped to create a small Spring poster for The Village of Riverside instead.

With my apologies, five months late, but seven months early.
My ASL DIctionary’s 2014 cartoon of a young Country girl in a calico dress with a crown of daisies showing the ASL hand sign for SPRING and PLANT. 

The flattened O hand comes up through the opposite C hand to open into a 5 hand Twice, like a plant sprouting from the ground. 
The hand sign for GROW is done Once.

After this correction, the ASL hand signs for all four seasons will be animated this year and available on the blog of the dictionary’s website, myasldictionary.com.

GAMBLING MAN

MyASLDictionary.com is still receiving comments in Russian script, not for the site’s ASL content but to post links ranging from Foreign Trade Business Services to Casino and Gambling websites. In recognition, I’m posting a new illustration of one of the ASL hand signs for GAMBLE. Instead of being dressed in the Uniform of a Casino Games Dealer, a young craps player with money in his hand, and a gold tooth in his grin shows the ASL hand sign for rolling the bones. The S hand shakes back and forth, then thrusts forward into an open 5 hand, like a gambler tossing dice. #ASL #signlanguage #gamble #dice #cartoon #myasldictionary

EUROPE
In 1815, Thomas Gallaudet travelled to Europe to study methods of teaching deaf students. This European journey led him to France, giving him an education in sign language he would bring back to America. As Gallaudet and Clerc make several appearances in my ASL dictionary, I cast instead a European model to show off one of the ASL hand signs for Europe, the star pattern on her dress matching the continent’s flag. Palm forward, the E hand arcs in a counter-clockwise circle, like the circle of twelve golden stars on Europe’s flag.

FUNNY MONEY

For the object that cannot buy you happiness, but it does pay the bills, my dictionary’s ASL hand sign for Currency. With a cartoon of Mr. Moneybags showing the ASL hand sign for Business, I chose Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghostly chained hands of his partner Jacob Marley to show the ASL hand signs for Money. Illustrated in 2013 for a flashcard set, Scrooge became a coloured addition to my dictionary instead. The Flattened O hand smacks into the opposite palm Twice, like slapping dollar bills into your hand.
