For irony, My ASL Dictionary has a Tibetan Monk for the ASL hand sign for HAVE, as they leave what they Have to achieve focus and enlightenment beyond possessions.
Fingertips of Bent Hands, thumbs up, move back to touch the sides of the Chest, like bringing something in to own or put in your wallet.
This two-handed sign also works with one hand.

In early December 2023, displaying My ASL Dictionary to a visiting member of the Salvation Army inspired me to illustrate another hand sign for Dog.
In my list of favourite dogs, the Top Dog is always Snoopy (even as a little kid, I would call all dogs that name), so I finished the ASL picture with a cartoon of the beagle’s creator, American cartoonist Charles Monroe ‘Sparky’ Schulz.
Dressed in a Charlie Brown sweater, with a pencil and pen in his left hand and a Plush Snoopy tucked in his arm, he shows the ASL hand sign for DOG.
Based on the fingerspelling of Dog, the D hand becomes a G hand as the middle finger brushes down the thumb several times, like snapping fingers for a Dog’s attention.

Creator of the comic strip Peanuts, Schulz’s art daily inspired readers with his humour and heart as he also inspired other artists, myself included. Growing up, I would spend hours and hours with my Aunt Ann’s copies of his graphic novels, entranced by the stories of his cartoon characters. Good Grief, my favourite toy wasn’t a teddy bear but a giant plush Snoopy.

A slender Father Christmas, Père Noël, shows an ASL hand sign for Christmas with an open toy sack and Wreath of Hands behind him.
Partial C hand arcs from the front of one shoulder to the next. The movement follows the shape of the Yuletide Wreath placed on the door as an invitation to the spirit of Christmas to enter the home. Joeux Noel!

Happy Winter Solstice!
In the second year of my ASL Dictionary’s creation, I focused on the hand signs shown in class but missing from the textbooks. There are two ASL signs for WINTER. The first is the hand sign for COLD (minus the facial expression of freezing), and the second is the initialized hand sign for Cold with the letter W.
The character I chose to represent this cold season was the Snow Queen. Instead of being emotionless, cold-hearted, and distant, this ice queen is dressed in snowflakes and happily grins while her icy fingers show the ASL hand sign for WINTER.
W hands held apart facing each other are shaken, like freezing hands in the winter snow.

For Instagram and Twitter I created another Animated Sneak Peek into My ASL Dictionary. Seeing more than the cover should allow viewers to see the dictionary as a good portable resource for American Sign Language. I almost started the cartoon with the I Love You sign, but felt ASL was more fitting for this Dictionary’s Ad. The QR code a link to this Author’s website.

For Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary, I’m posting all My ASL Dictionary’s cartoons of the Doctor. Existing at the same time as the First Doctor but in a different continuity predating regeneration, actor Peter Cushing appeared as Doctor Who for two Dalek films in 1965 and 1966. An eccentric grandfather who invented the Tardis in his garden, this Doctor (named Dr. Who) shows the ASL hand sign for EMERGENCY, his worried face exemplifying how desperate an Emergency it is. With a Frantic Facial Expression, the E hand shakes side to side to copy the flashing lights of an ambulance.

As a Happy Accident, this cartoon of Doctor Who has two different coloured eyes. Not because Peter Cushing had Heterochromia but because his reference picture for the film was colour-damaged, turning the right eye brown.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, another cartoon Doctor from My ASL Dictionary, this time, the Thirteen Doctor played actress Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor. While struggling with unearthed truths of her past, the Doctor presses on with a warm smile as a lighthearted adventurer who values friendships, invention, and non-violent solutions. Dressed in a grey trenchcoat and a navy blue t-shirt with a rainbow stripe, an outfit I didn’t appreciate until I drew it for my dictionary, the Thirteen Doctor shows the ASL hand sign for PEOPLE. Palms down, both P hands move in alternate circles like pedaling a bike. Similar motion the hand sign for Visit.

The heavy load of responsibility is emotionally difficult to bear. Often an extra source of worry or stress. I chose a Parent for the hand sign for Responsible, to bear the burden of this hand sign is a Surgeon. Dressed in her uniform, visor, gloves, and surgery cap she illustrates the ASL hand sign for BURDEN. Fingertips of bent B hands placed on the shoulder slightly pushing the shoulder down, like bearing a heavy load. Similar to the hand sign for Responsibile.
