EASY BEING GREEN

Verdant, Vert, the Colour for Nature, Safety, Luck, Health, and sometimes Sickness and Envy. The next colour from my ASL Dictionary is a quizzical mime showing the ease of the ASL hand sign for GREEN.

The G hand sign shakes as it twists at the wrist, like tossing fresh seeds to a garden.

CANADIAN ORANGE

As promised, the Canadian variant for the Colour shade between Red and Yellow, not the Fruit.
My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a mime in a flowered Bowler hat shows the Canadian ASL hand sign for the colour ORANGE.

Both I hands held apart as the pinkie fingers circle and rotate around each other twice.

ORANGE YOU GLAD

Orange is more than a blending of the primary colours red and yellow it is also a popular citrus fruit. Handsigns for both are on Page 106 of My ASL Dictionary. For Canada and the United States, squeezing your hand sign in front of your mouth is the hand sign for the edible fruit laden with sweetness and vitamin C. In the United States, this is also the hand sign for the colour. Canada uses a different hand sign for the colour, which I will be posting tomorrow.

My ASL DIctionary’s cartoon of a mime shows the hand sign for ORANGE fruit with a handful of the oranges appearing with the word in English.

C hand held in front of the mouth (or chin) is closed into an S hand twice, like squeezing an orange.

This updated post also corrects an error. The Dictionary instructs starting with an O hand sign when the Orange handsign should begin with a C.

CHESTNUT BROWN

After completing a week of animating my ASL Dictionary’s hand signs for colour, my friend Shannon Stuart pointed out I had missed the colour! Thanks to her help, not just with this project but the making of my dictionary itself, today’s Word of the Day is Brown, the colour of brunettes, earth, chestnuts, and chocolate. A Mime with a Beer can in his hand (as the hand sign is similar to the hand sign for BEER) shows one of the ASL hand signs for BROWN. B hand moves down the side of the cheek Once.

BLUE EYES

The third primary of the colour wheel, a blue-eyed Mime from My ASL Dictionary shows the ASL hand sign for the colour BLUE.

The B hand twists at the wrist twice.

Blue was also the first ASL colour animation where I had the colour appear in the eyes from the beginning, visually suggesting the colour was always there, just hiding under the black and white. The animations made after Blue followed this route.

MELLOW YELLOW

One of my favourite primary colours, My ASL Dictionary’s Mime in a Sun Hat shows the ASL hand sign for YELLOW.

The Y hand twists at the wrist twice.

RED ROUGE

Starting with the Primary Colours first, My ASL Dictionary has a Mime with two pigtails shows the ASL hand sign for the colour RED.

The tip of the Index finger in front of the lips brushes down the chin as it bends into an X hand, for the lips red blush.

ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW

This next week, the posts will cover the ASL hand signs for Colours. In Sign Language, bright colours can distract from the motion of the hands, which is why ASL interpreters usually dress in dark clothing. For the cartoon medium, however, colour brings extra life to the still image. I picked Mimes as the characters to show the ASL hand signs for Colours as they ironically dress only in black and white. Animation allows me to transform each one from their monochromatic outfits to the colored attire they wear in my book. A mime in his Black Top Hat, Bow Tie, and Suspenders shows the ASL hand sign for COLOUR, which returns to his outfit when the hand sign is finished.
Like each colour of the rainbow, the Fingertips flutter above the chin.

PRACTICAL CATS

When choosing the character to show curiosity, I went with the animal most known for that trait. Coincidentally in 2019, a Cats film based on a Broadway show, based on a book of cat poetry, was released in theatres. Inspired by the production’s costumes, both in digital and in fabric, I drew an anthropomorphic cat with white gloves instead of paws. A Practical Cat like the book’s title.
