SKATES ON ICE

Gliding across the Ice on curved metal blades is part of many popular Winter Games in Canada, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Synchronized Skating, Hockey, and Skating in the Park.
My ASL Dictionary has a 2013 cartoon of a Man with a cold red nose dressed for the Winter in a Colourful Parka, Hat, Earmuffs and Scarf to show the ASL hand sign for ICE SKATE.

Palms up, both X hands alternate back and forth, like a skater’s blades press forward on the ice.

A second version of the SKATES has both X hands also move side to side as they alternate back and forth like a skater’s blades glide on ice with lateral movement in each step.

VOLLEYBALL COURT

On a Sunny Beach, the Grass, or Indoor Court, two teams compete by hitting the ball back and forth over the net to the other team’s territory.
I have cartoons of two Volleyball Players dressed in Sportswear to show separate versions of the ASL hand sign for VOLLEYBALL.

The 8 hands thrust up and forward to open into 5 hands twice, like hitting the ball back over the net.

Hands up, the 3 hands thrust apart and forward twice, like batting at the approaching ball.

BOWLING STRIKE

A Game for Tournaments, Parties, or a Relaxing Hobby. Rolling a heavy ball (some with three-finger inserts) down a narrow track to knock down a group of wooden pins.

A popular Competitive Sport, people like my Father, Robert Hurlbut, also head to the Golf Course with Drivers, Putters, Wedges, and Clubs for Exercise, Relaxation, and a Fun Game.

SOCCER PLAYOFF

Two teams move a ball across the field with their feet. In the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and some Asian countries, this Football Game is called Soccer.

Like a foot kicking a ball, the B hands strike each other twice.
The Dominant hand’s index finger strikes the middle of the opposite hand’s palm.

Similar to the hand sign for KICK.

BASEBALL GAME

As much a symbol of American culture as Apple Pie is the Game of Baseball.
My ASL Dictionary’s updated cartoon of a Women’s League player in Pigtails and a red hat illustrates the ASL hand sign for BASEBALL.
The S hands held together with one over the other, swing down from shoulder twice like a baseball player holding the bat ready for the next pitch.

FOOTBALL HISTORY

The book’s first ASL illustration for Football was with a football player. After adding another story to My ASL Dictionary’s Deaf History, I replaced the image with a cartoon of Paul Hubbard, the deaf Gallaudet Quarterback who introduced the Footballl Huddle to the game of Football.

Hubbard, dressed in an 1890s Leather helmet and football uniform, shows the ASL hand sign for FOOTBALL. Sitting beside his picture is a small biography of his role in Football History.

The Open 5 hands, held apart, palms facing each other, come together twice, like two football players tackling each other.

BASKETBALL SHOT

A 2015 illustration created before I learned of the court game’s invention by Canadian-American James Naismith, My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of a Basketball player showing the ASL hand sign for BASKETBALL.

Both 3 hands simultaneously flick upward, back and forth twice, like holding up a basketball for the dribble or the shot.

CURLING STONES

Sliding Polished Stones across the ice with Brooms to sweep the path to the target was the Winter Sport brought to Canada from Scotland.

Curling in Canada is also historically aligned with the military, so My ASL Dictionary has a Scottish Curler in a Military uniform (this time with a curling brush behind him) illustrating the ASL hand sign for CURLING.

The S hand is held near the body to push upward and open into a Slanted 5 hand, like releasing the curling stone to its target.

Each country has a sport attached to its culture. For Canada, the country that invented Basketball, that Game is Ice Hockey.
