For May, a group of Recreational staff pitches larger-than-life ideas. A perfect setup for the ASL hand sign for IDEA.

In a room filled with Thought Bubbles (each sphere a different resident activity), a cartoon of General Manager, Bryce McBain, shows the ASL hand sign for IDEA.

Touch the forehead with the tip of the pinkie finger, then pull the I hand out and up into the air like pulling a brilliant thought out of the head.

GLASS PANE

In addition to corrective lenses, glass is the primary material for bottles, cups, mirrors, vases, and windows. As Window washers aren’t known for wearing exciting outfits, My ASL Dictionary‘s cartoon of an artisan Glassblower illustrates the ASL hand sign for GLASS. To make him look cool, I dropped his protective glasses back on his nose.

The Bent Index finger taps the front teeth twice, like showing off the tooth’s porcelain. The hand sign for Glass, Tooth, Ceramic, Porcelain, China, or even Cement.
Similar movement for the ASL Canadian variant hand sign for Metal.

SPECTACLES

For some, maintaining or protecting 20/20 vision requires wearing a pair of corrective lenses in a frame. After a trip on the sidewalk, I lost the right lens from my glasses and had to wait over two weeks for a repair. To mark the day I could see clearly again, another hand sign for Glasses.

My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a woman with long black hair and a purple top illustrates the ASL hand sign for GLASSES.

Tap the modified C hand on the cheek and brow twice, like adjusting the rims of prescription glasses.

Drawing the modified C hands up to the eyes is the ASL hand sign for GOGGLES.

THE BITTER PILL

Medication comes in various forms, each one to best fit the needed treatment. The most common visual of Medicine is the Pill, with the term “A bitter pill to swallow” being an expression for something that is unpleasant but must be accepted.

On page 94 of My ASL Dictionary is a cartoon of a Candy Striper illustrating the hand sign for Medicine.
A new cartoon of a grey-haired Pharmacist with a lab coat and a medicine bottle illustrates the ASL hand sign for PILL.

The index finger of the G hand flicks off the thumb twice as the open mouth closes, mimicking popping a pill into the mouth.
