GROUNDHOG DAYS

It’s that time of year again, when those of us tired of the cold weather cross our fingers for a badger’s prediction that Winter will finish early. The holiday originated in Germany with Candlemas and was adopted in Canada and the United States as the February 2nd tradition, Groundhog Day. If the hibernating badger or groundhog emerges from its den and sees its shadow, there are four to six more weeks of Winter.

To update My ASL Dictionary, which is missing this Weather-sensitive mammal, a cartoon of the Groundhog’s Day Dignitary of the Inner Circle in his Black Top Hat showing an ASL hand sign for GROUNDHOG DAY, with the furry forecaster on his shoulder telling him how long winter will last.

GROUNDHOG
Fingerspell Groundhog OR Closed Fist pushes up from behind the opposite flat hand like a groundhog peeking out of the ground to look for its shadow.
DAY
Index finger arcs down on the opposite arm, like the sun’s arc during a day.
