COLLEGE EDUCATION

After High School, it had been years since I had an opportunity to study ASL, but I never lost my love for the language. In 2007, a good friend told me about Conestoga College’s ASL programs, and I enrolled in Beginner ASL 1010. My generous Father, Robert Hurlbut, paid for the course and weekly transportation. The program was a great reintroduction to ASL and my first lessons in deaf history and deaf culture. With all the extra knowledge I had gained, I sadly failed the course, the first F in my educational history. The grade didn’t stop me. In 2022, I returned to Conestoga College to complete ASL 1010. With a background in ASL studies, a new textbook, and another incredible teacher, not even my network’s low bandwidth could stop me from completing the course with a 95%!

Mapman/Louis Lane (his last name kept changing) was a Superhero character I created for an independent comic at Sheridan College. As a College creation, he seemed the perfect character to illustrate the ASL hand sign for COLLEGE.

The palm slaps down on the opposite palm and slides off to arc upwards in a circular C arc.
Similar to the ASL hand sign for SCHOOL, but after hitting the palm arcs upward for higher education.
