GHOSTLY SPIRITS

The first Halloween Monsters drawn for My ASL Dictionary showed the ASL hand signs for Mathematical terms. With a Floating Sheet for the hand sign for Percent, I chose the mythical wraith, the Headless Horseman, as the Incorporeal to show the ASL hand sign for GHOST, his invisible face represented by a floating monocle.

The F hand draws upward in a wavy motion from the opposite F hand to represent a floating spirit.
OR
The F hand circles upward from the opposite S hand like a soul rising from a dead body.

A WICKED SANDWICH

In American Sign Language, there are no visual similarities to the words Which, Witch, and Sandwich (the pun is only audio). That is why, animated, this spellcaster makes the Sandwitch joke as a typo that my sorceress would quickly correct.

My ASL Dictionary’s next green-skinned witch with scraggly hair, dark robes, a pointed hat, and a spider pattern on her right eye, shows another ASL hand sign for SANDWICH.

The bent dominant hand with palm facing in slips into the opposite bent hand, like filling into a sandwich.
Similar to the previous hand sign, this Canadian variant of the Sandwich hand sign has the bent non-dominant hand in front of the mouth to represent the two slices of bread holding the sandwich, and the dominant bent hand represents placing the delicious filling inside.

A WEIRD DISH

Another sample of a Halloween weird sister, My ASL Dictionary’s updated cartoon of a green-skinned Witch with a black dress, long scraggly hair, and a pointed hat showing an ASL hand sign for SANDWICH.

The witch’s large hands join in front of her mouth. The flat hand goes to the mouth as the opposite bent hand slips over it, a visual of a sandwich for eating. The dominant hand represents the filling of lettuce, meat, onions, peanut butter, etc., and the bent non-dominant hand represents the two slices of bread.

My Dictionary has groups of Clowns, Crash Test Dummies, Playing Cards, and Witches, but even with similar characters, I strive to make each one creative and individual.

PRETTY UGLY

My ASL Dictionary has a Witch showing the ASL hand sign for UGLY. For the sign for Extremely Ugly (almost frighteningly horrid), I went with a creature a little less human, but still cute and adorable.

A cartoon of a Green Forest Troll with a grimace on his face shows the ASL hand sign for HIDEOUS.
The index fingers of the “ONE” hands are crossed in front of the nose to draw apart and bent into X hands, like a double version of the UGLY hand sign.

UGLY BETTY

With  October 31st almost a week away, the Halloween posts continue with another witch.
My ASL Dictionary using a Princess showing off the hand sign for Beautiful, it made fairy-tale sense to have a Halloween Witch for the ASL hand sign for UGLY.

With an ugly scowl (an important facial expression for the sign), my green-skinned witch shows the hand sign for visually unpleasing.
(While breaking the picture apart into separate pieces for animation, I accidentally created a beautiful new scar on the witch’s nose that I decided to keep).

Pull the index finger of the ONE hand under the nose as it curls into an X hand.

PROFESSIONAL STUDENT

I’m excited for tomorrow. The University of Guelph’s @guelphaslclub is having its first ASL class of the F25 semester! To match the Club’s ASL word of the week, My ASL Dictionary’s updated cartoon of an upperclass student with rebellious coloured streaks in his hair shows the ASL hand sign for PUPIL (a person studying in school).

The number 5 hand closes into a flat O hand sign on the opposite palm as it arcs up to the side and is flung open. Similar to LEARN, the hand sign shows the visual of drawing information from the pages of a book.

BEWITCHING

The most popular Halloween costume for women (next to sexy nurse) is the Witch. A woman, often ugly, dressed in dark robes with malignant supernatural powers. With My ASL Dictionary having other green-skinned sorceresses, I thought the character for this title should instead look more enchanting.

Dressed in a classy Halloween outfit I would like to own, this Spellcaster shows two versions of the ASL hand sign for WITCH.

The bent index finger of the X hand on the nose lowers down to tap the opposite X hand once or twice, the classic visual of a witch’s or warlock’s long crooked nose.
OR
The back of the X hand taps against the nose twice to reveal a witch’s crooked nose.

HALLOWEEN FACE

With Halloween Memorabilia filling the stores with Candy, Costumes, and Decorations for the approaching All Hallows Eve, the next two weeks will feature Halloween Art and cartoon monsters from My ASL Dictionary.

The oldest Halloween tradition is the Jack-O-Lantern. A lantern carved from a pumpkin, its frightening face glowing from the windows and porches on Halloween night.

An updated cartoon of a woman dressed in a Jack-O-Lantern costume shows the ASL hand sign for PUMPKIN and MELON.

The forefinger and thumb of the 8 hand flick off the back of the opposite hand twice, like tapping a melon to test its ripeness.

PARKING SIGN

At business, at home, in a garage, or the side of a road, all car rides begin and end with a parking spot.
My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a Metro Police Officer illustrates the ASL hand sign for PARK.

The 3-hand Classifier (representing a vehicle) taps the opposite palm twice like a car moving into a parking spot.

STREET SIGNS

Even now, the flying car remains a science fiction dream; for car travel, the wheels are always on the road. The stretch of paved surface for motor vehicles, winding between two or more points.

My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a Crossing Guard shows the ASL hand signs for STREET and ROAD.

Both Open hands in front of the body, palms facing each other, move forward in a parallel movement, a visual of the road ahead.
