This week’s posted hand signs for Food will finish with the ASL hand signs for the cutlery that serves it. Silverware comes in a Set of Three. My ASL Dictionary already had the Three Stooges for the hand sign for PAIN, so I used the Three Marx Brothers to display the hand signs for the Spoon, Fork, and Knife.
For the similar ASL hand signs SPOON and SOUP, a cartoon of American comedian, actor, and mime artist Arthur “Harpo” Marx, in a large black hat, puffy hair, and polka dot tie, illustrates the differences between the sign for the cutlery and the dish.
SPOON
The back of the U hand quickly wipes the palm of the opposite hand twice, like a spoon scooping up a meal.
SOUP
Hands held higher up the chest, the back of the U hand swipes up the curved palm of the opposite hand upward to the mouth twice, like eating soup from a bowl.
STEW
Fingerspelled
