By 2015, I had already begun placing ASL hand signs beside each of my dictionary’s short biographies of Deaf History. After learning about Deaf Wrestler Matthew Stanley Hamill in class and watching his 2010 film biography, The Hammer, I wanted to add him to my dictionary. My book already had a Peter Parker for the ASL hand sign for Wrestling, so I drew a cartoon of Mr. Hamill in his wrestling suit for the ASL hand sign for MEDAL, in recognition of the countless awards in his wrestling career.
Both index fingers trace down the neck for the ribbon while the bent index and thumbs bend into half circles over the chest for the award’s metal disk.
