BAD LITTLE BOY

Another early 2013 picture in My ASL Dictionary. Like the majority of my cartoons, this little devil used to have a happy smile on his face. After learning more about the importance of facial expression in sign language and its effect on the meaning of each word, I had him drop his mischievous smile as he does in the animation to show the ASL hand sign for BAD.

Palm facing in B hand with fingers on mouth or chin turns away as the palm flips down and away or into the palm of the opposite hand, like tossing away something that tastes bad.

NOIR

ASL Word of the Day. The conclusion of the ASL Colour spectrum with the mix of the primary colors that started it, ending this rainbow display with the color of turning off the lights. Thank you for joining My ASL Dictionary this week for the list of ASL hand signs for color.

BLUE EYES

The third primary of the colour wheel, a Mime from My ASL Dictionary shows the ASL hand sign for the colour Blue. The B hand twists at the wrist twice.

Blue was also the first ASL colour animation where I had the colour appear in the eyes from the beginning, visually suggesting the colour was always there, just hiding under the black and white. The animations made after Blue followed this route.

ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW

This next week, the posts will cover the ASL hand signs for Colours. In Sign Language, bright colours can distract from the motion of the hands, which is why ASL interpreters usually dress in dark clothing. For the cartoon medium, however, colour brings extra life to the still image. I picked Mimes as the characters to show the ASL hand signs for Colours as they ironically dress only in black and white. Animation allows me to transform each one from their monochromatic outfits to the colored attire they wear in my book. A mime in his Black Top Hat, Bow Tie, and Suspenders shows the ASL hand sign for COLOUR, which returns to his outfit when the hand sign is finished.
Like each colour of the rainbow, the Fingertips flutter above the chin.

PRACTICAL CATS

When choosing the character to show curiosity, I went with the animal most known for that trait. Coincidentally in 2019, a Cats film based on a Broadway show, based on a book of cat poetry, was released in theatres. Inspired by the production’s costumes, both in digital and in fabric, I drew an anthropomorphic cat with white gloves instead of paws. A Practical Cat like the book’s title.

BEATS ME

A companion term to knowledge, the scarecrow now illustrates the hand sign for not having any. For fun, I had him try to think about the answer first.
Cartoon Scarecrow shows the ASL hand sign for Don’t Know.

KNOW IN YOUR NOGGIN

As the only true Wisdom is in knowing we know nothing, I saw no better comic representative for this than the Wizard of Oz’s  Scarecrow with No Brain (Socrates is only funny in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure)..

My ASL Dictionary has a comic of the Scarecrow showing the ASL hand sign for KNOW.

A BECOMING ZOOT SUIT

Some hand signs are impossible to draw with a single picture. To illustrate this hand sign for my dictionary, I drew three men, changing the pattern on the jacket to show the night becoming day, the animation making the wardrobe extra charming.

My ASL Dictionary has a left-handed grey-haired Couturier with a changing pattern on his suit, shows the ASL hand signs for BECOME and TURN INTO.

With the Dominant hand in front of the other at an angle, the Flat B hands, palms together, rotate to exchange their positions, a visual of change.

BROTHER JACK

My ASL Dictionary uses cartoons of the characters on the Playing Card Deck, kings, queens, jacks, jokers, and aces for the ASL signs for family.

A Jack is not a Prince but a Knave, the servant of the King and Queen. My ASL Dictionary has a Playing Card Jack dressed in his elegant royal uniform illustrating the ASL hand sign for BROTHER.

The Modified L hand on the temple becomes a “1” hand as it moves down to the opposite “1” hand.
