CANADA DAY 2026

To celebrate my country’s 159th birthday,  animated art from My ASL Dictionary. A Cartoon of a Sentry from Ottawa’s Canadian Forces Ceremonial Guard shows the ASL hand signs for CANADA, BIRTHDAY, AGE, and 159 .

SOFT TOUCH

In Physics, the opposite of a Hard Solid is a Soft Fluid.
My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of a Dishwasher with a Towel (a position that involves working in both Water and Humidity), showing the ASL hand sign for WET and SOFT.

The open 5 hands pull down as the fingers close into the thumbs twice, like a sponge absorbing water.

SUMMER BREEZE

Yesterday, Sunday, July 21, 2026, was perfect as the longest day of the year for it contained both Father’s Day, Indigenous Peoples Day and the beginning of the Summer Solstice.
As Summer in Canada is known for its warm weather and outdoor vacations, My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of a character dressed for a relaxing holiday on the beach. With the bright sun behind him, dressed in a retro bathing suit and sunglasses, this beach hunk shows the ASL hand sign for SUMMER.

The ONE hand sign draws the index finger across the brow into an X hand, like wiping sweat off your brow on a hot summer day.

NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY

Today, Father’s Day lands on another important holiday in Canada, National Indigenous Peoples Day. An annual celebration honouring the rich histories and enduring contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis across Canada.

From My ASL Dictionary, a cartoon of a Metis Chief shows the ASL hand sign for Aboriginal/Native, introducing a flag with a glimpse of more of the book’s Indigenous characters before showing the National Indigenous People’s Day flag.

HARD KNOCKS

Hard is an adjective with two meanings. The first describes a firm and or solid object, while the second describes a task that is difficult to understand or accomplish.

Warriors are the symbol of Strength and Endurance, remaining solid and unbreakable against the Hardest of challenges. My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of a Samurai in a Green Kabuto and Yoroi showing the ASL hand sign for HARD.

The Bent Clawed V hand comes down on the opposite V hand, like striking a hard surface.

MORE OR LESS

The opposite of More, the word Less describes a smaller amount, quantity, degree, and or quality.

My ASL Dictionary also has its cartoon of a Sarcastic Magician showing the ASL hand sign for LESS.

The Dominant hand lowers down above the palm of the opposite hand, a visual for measuring a smaller size.

LESS THAN
The dominant hand starts under the opposite hand and moves downward. A visual for a smaller extent, amount, or degree. Also, a visual for below that amount and from there on down.

ONCE MORE TIME!

More is a description of a greater quantity, amount, degree or size as well as a higher quality or greatness.

As the best magicians have more than one trick, My ASL Dictionary contains a cartoon of a sarcastic magician showing the ASL hand sign for MORE.
I also kept this character for the hand sign for LESS.

Both flattened O hands are brought together twice, a visual of adding more.

With the Flattened O hands together, the dominant hand’s index finger taps up and down to visualize a small addition.

OPPOSITE FORCES

From Hot and Cold, Light and Dark, to Yin and Yang. Opposites are pairs of Elements whose meanings both contradict and also complement each other. The following posts will cover more hand signs of Opposites.

HAMMER OF JUSTICE

Each Court Trial begins and ends with the Judge’s Gavel, the symbol of the Magistrate’s judicial authority and courtroom order.

My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a classic Judge in a White Wig and Black Robes shows another ASL hand sign for JUDGE.

The fist makes a double rapping movement, mimicking the banging of the judge’s gavel.

THE JUDGE

Carrying the name of Judgement in its title is the position of Judge. The judicial authority who is vested with the power to hear, decide, and administer legal matters in court.

My ASL Dictionary’s early 2012 cartoon of a young judge illustrates the ASL hand sign for JUDGE.

Palms facing each other, both F hands alternate going up and down, then the flat hands lower down the body, a combination sign of JUDGEMENT and AGENT.
