SUPER HERO

While not all heroes wear capes, one of the first superheroes was Superman. Created for Action Comics by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, this hero in blue tights and a red cape is a symbol of truth, justice, and hope.

In American Sign Language, there are several hand signs for Hero, including Courage, Strength, and Bravery.

My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a left-handed, blue-eyed Kryptonian in a blue shirt shows an older ASL hand sign for HERO.

Shoulders back, the index finger traces the letter S over the chest, a display of the famous Superman Shield.
HERO is often finger-spelled.

Many of my early ASL art pieces (2010-2013) had left-handed characters. When I began my studies in ASL, it took me some time to grasp the signer’s perspective.
