NUMBER CRUNCHING

The first subset of Formal Science is Mathematics, the study of numbers, quantity, structure and space.

My ASL Dictionary cartoon of a calculating Mathematician illustrates the ASL hand sign for MATHEMATICS.
An initialized sign, the M hands brush against each other as the arms cross twice.

For the different branches of Math, the hand sign is the same but with a different initial. Ex. T hand for Trigonometry, G hand for Geometry, C hand for Calculus, and A hand for Algebra.

STARGAZER

The next subset of Natural Science is Astronomy, the study of the sun, moon, stars, planets, comets, gas, galaxies, and other non-Earthly bodies and phenomena.

As fairy tales also searched the stars for wishes and magic, My ASL Dictionary has a Princess with her smitten Frog Prince illustrating the ASL hand sign for ASTRONOMY. A combination sign of STARS and STUDY.
In the book, the Princess shows the root sign for Star, while the Frog shows the action modifier for Study. In this updated animation, I have the Princess do the full sign (with the Frog Prince adding an extra Study)

STARS
Pointing up, the index fingers brush against each other as they point to the stars in the sky.
STUDY
The open 5 hand fingers wriggle above the opposite hand, representing eyes quickly scanning information from a book.

Moving on from the Science of the Body to the Science of the Mind.
Psychology is the study of human experience – from thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to the inner workings of brain function and social interactions.

The next subset of Natural Science is Physics. The study of matter, motion, energy, force, and the interactions between them.

For his development of the theories of relativity, My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of Physicist Albert Einstein in a tweed jacket, illustrating the ASL hand sign for PHYSICS.

The knuckles of the bent V hands tap each other twice, a visual for striking atoms.
Similar motion to the hand sign for Electricity.

My favourite subset of Natural Science is Biology.
The study of Life and the Circadian rhythm in the working cogs and gears of the living machine. Essential knowledge in maintaining health, medicine, and environmental conservation.

The B hands move in alternating circles in front of the body, similar to the movement for Science.

In comparison to male clothing, women’s fashions come in a large variety of shapes and sizes. In ASL, there is a hand sign specifically for a woman’s shirt.

GERMAN EAGLE

It was a great surprise and delight to see my book, My ASL Dictionary, presented by the German bookstore site, Biblioraum.com. A digital library room for carefully curated books and literary treasures.
Before contacting the store to thank them, I animated my Dictionary’s picture of a young Fräulein in dress, showing the ASL hand sign for GERMANY.

Crossing both 5 hands at the wrists, the fingers flutter, a visual of feathers for the Bundesadler Eagle of the German coat of arms.

SUPER HERO

While not all heroes wear capes, one of the first superheroes was Superman. Created for Action Comics by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, this hero in blue tights and a red cape is a symbol of truth, justice, and hope.

In American Sign Language, there are several hand signs for Hero, including Courage, Strength, and Bravery.

My ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of a left-handed, blue-eyed Kryptonian in a blue shirt shows an older ASL hand sign for HERO.

Shoulders back, the index finger traces the letter S over the chest, a display of the famous Superman Shield.
HERO is often finger-spelled.
