Sailors in the past used stars in the sky to chart their course, while the Compass Rose, the star on the Map for direction and orientation, continues to guide Sailors across the sea. My ASL Dictionary features cartoons of four Maritime Explorers illustrating the hand signs for the Compass’s four directions. North, South, East, and West (or as children remember it, Never Eat Shredded Wheat).
Just as Polaris, the North Star, holds its position above the North Pole, Earth’s magnetic field pulls the Compass needle up to the North. For this direction constant, a cartoon of a 15th-century Italian Explorer in blue, the Compass Rose behind him, illustrates the ASL hand sign for NORTH.
N hand moves upward in front of the body.
