Finding American Sign Language in film and television is still a rarity. My reason for first watching Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 film Shape of Water was not its incredible effects or touching story. I went for the sign language a news article reported was there.
I illustrated this cartoon while remembering the meet-cute between the two leads, as one offers the other a boiled egg and then signs the word egg. Completing this illustration of a sea creature using sign language became tricky. I was concerned the details of its claws and dark scales would make viewing the hand sign difficult. I went with a simple design.
My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of an Actor in a green mocap suit showing the ASL hand signs for EGG.
Angled towards each other, the middle finger of the H hand rests across the opposite hand. Both hands swing down and outward, like cracking an egg.
Once or Twice, depending on the context or the region.
