With their Names on Books, Statues, Schools, and Deaf History, My ASL Dictionary has several cartoons of Gallaudet and Clerc, beginning with the book’s cover.
Episcopal priest and American educator Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet travelled across the sea to Europe, searching for an organized education for the Deaf that he could bring back to America. After a year spent studying at the Institut Royal des Sourds-Muets in Paris, France, he returned to the States with his friend, French instructor Laurent Clerc, to create and establish the first School for the Deaf in America.
A cartoon of a young Thomas Gallaudet shows the ASL hand sign for HEARING, referring to the Hearing Community.
The Index finger rotates twice in front of the lips, a visual for words tumbling out of the mouth.
