Unlike static Spoken Languages, Sign Language continues to grow and change within its community. This is why word updates to My ASL Dictionary are posted on its Author’s Site. Demonstrating this visual is my dictionary’s cartoon of a Cab Driver showing three different versions of the ASL hand sign for STRUGGLE. As his pained facial expression changes, the art signature on his yellow uniform shows the year the hand sign was taught.
2014 – Index fingers point to each other, simultaneously moving in small circles, like two opponents facing off.
2017 – Index fingers pointed to each other, simultaneously moving side to side like trying to wrestle free.
2024 – Index fingers pointed to each other are forcefully thrust back and forth like attempting to break free of restraint.
