My ASL Dictionary has cartoons of two CSI Detectives to show the two hand signs for WHY. For this post, I took my Speed Racer cartoon to show the ASL hand signs for WHY, Rhetorical WHY, and BECAUSE to illustrate how the wh-q facial expression defines the word as much as the hands.
WHY: Eyebrows furrow as the fingertips of the bent hand touch the temple then pull out sideways into a Y hand.
RHETORICAL WHY (used to make a point, not get an answer): Eyebrows up as the fingertips of the flat hand pull down the temple into a Y hand.
BECAUSE: Eyebrows up as the fingertips of the flat hand pull down the temple into an A hand.
Three similar hand signs with only the first being a question.

In My ASL Dictionary, this cartoon of Speed Racer for BECAUSE is incorrect. With his hand ending in a Y hand instead of an A hand, he’s showing the Rhetorical WHY. My apologies.
