YEAR OF THE DRAGON

GONG HEI FAT CHOY! For the Chinese New Year Spring Festival, February 10, 2024, from my ASL Dictionary, the fifth animal in the Lunar cycle. A Dragon in a biker outfit and black gloves illustrates the ASL hand sign for DRAGON. The 5 hand, palm down, is placed in front of the lower part of the face. The fingertips wiggle as the hand darts forward from the mouth twice, like fire roaring from a Dragon’s mouth. #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage #signlanguage #dragon #chinesenewyear2024 #cartoon #myasldictionary

There is a story behind the design for the Dragon. In 2013, our ASL teacher, Charlie McKelvey, had the class tell a children’s story in sign language. For this assignment, I chose the story I wrote in high school, My Grandma has a new boyfriend. As this story became a part of my ASL lessons, I included its characters in my dictionary: the Grandma for BETTER, the New Boyfriend for FIRST OF ALL, the story’s narrator Matt, for BUFFALO, and the Dragon from the biker gang, The Dragons, for DRAGON.
