GROUNDHOG DAY

In Germany, the end of the Christmas Season, Candlemas, is marked as Badger Day, a tradition that also immigrated to Canada and the United States as Groundhog Hog Day. Every February 2nd, if the hibernating badger or groundhog emerges from its den and sees its shadow, there are four to six more weeks of Winter. To update my Dictionary, which is missing this Weather-sensitive mammal, I have a Groundhog’s Day Dignitary of the Inner Circle in his Black Top Hat showing an ASL hand sign for GROUNDHOG, with the furry forecaster on his shoulder telling him how longer Winter will last. Fingerspell Groundhog or Closed Fist pushes up from behind the opposite flat hand like a groundhog peeking out of the ground to look for its shadow.
