This morning, I got a visit from the Salvation Army, and one of them saw the ASL homework on my computer and told me of their interest in Sign Language. I told her of my studies and showed her a copy of My ASL Dictionary, and she asked to see the hand sign for DOG. In my dictionary, however, is the older hand sign, so I immediately made a note to myself to draw an updated version. Now I’m easily distracted, so before I forgot my plan, I grabbed my pencil and did an initial sketch of Charles “Sparky” Schulz, creator of the Peanuts in a Charlie Brown Sweater doing the hand sign for Dog (with Snoopy behind him). I’ve been a fan of his Peanuts strip since I was a kid. When I was little, I called all dogs Snoopy. What’s funny is that I found drawing Snoopy (my favourite Dog) way more difficult than drawing his artist. I’ll return to finish the picture after I complete my other projects, but I’m happy with how it looks. As I store the pencil drawing in my ASL Book folder, I now have a Before Picture to compare with the After.
