2023 is the 60th anniversary of BBC’s Doctor Who. In recognition, my ASL Dictionary’s cartoon of the next incarnation of the Gallifreyan time-traveller and my first favourite Doctor,
Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor
. Dressed in a ruffled shirt and velvet smoking jacket (colour reversed from the book to fit the appearance on the show), this dapper man of action and science shows the ASL hand sign for TRANSLATE. Perfect for a skilled linguist who also knows Venusian Akido and reversing the polarity of the neutron flow.
The index fingers of the hand signs for ONE face each other as the wrists twist and reverse positions twice or once for the visual of changing one language into another.

When learning this ASL hand sign, I misunderstood the difference between translation and interpret. To clear up this error, I illustrated two Doctors (3 and 4) to show the distinction between the two terms.
