The fictional character Kato, the Green Hornet’s valet/chauffeur/bodyguard//mechanic changed nationalities with each adaptation. For the 1966 television program The Green Hornet, Kato was a Chinese chauffeur played by pop culture icon Bruce Lee. For this recognition, My ASL Dictionary has a cartoon of Bruce Lee’s Kato in a black chauffeur uniform illustrating the updated ASL hand sign for China, a loan sign from CSL Chinese Sign language. The X hand draws across the chest from the left to the right, then down the abdomen, like tracing a backward 7 pattern with the buttons on the clothing.
