To make each ASL illustration memorable in my dictionary, it helps to have the cartoon characters have a connection to the ASL words they use. As Paper Mill workers aren’t exciting, I drew a character attached to the main ingredient for Paper, Wood. A cartoon of my favourite dancing Log Driver (from NFB’s Log Driver’s Waltz) shows the ASL hand sign for PAPER, PAPYRUS, and PARCHMENT. The dominant palm strikes the opposite palm twice, like pressing wood fibers into a thin piece of paper. The wedding ring on the Log Driver’s finger also helps show it’s the two palms pressing into each other.
