In ASL, starting a new sentence can also begin with the Time. For a time that happened earlier or previous to an event, the ASL hand sign for PAST, PRIOR TO, or BEFORE can be used. Taking my Casino Card Dealer from the hand sign for NEXT, I added the Queen of Hearts (MOM HS) to his collection, and later the Joker card (BABY HS) on his arm as he illustrates the two ASL hand signs used for Prior To and Before. As the opposite hand stays still, the slightly bent hand moves back towards the body to gesture to the past.
