I finished My ASL Dictionary in 2020, but as my education in American Sign Language continues, I create new ASL illustrations. After accuracy, the second challenge for these cartoons is finding an original character to model the ASL word (the better ones with a connection to the word itself). Instead of a dressmaker working with cloth, a man in a partially-wrapped mummy costume shows the hand sign for Material,Fabric, and Cloth (I guess it’s lucky he missed making an appearance for my Halloween classes).
The Flat O hand signs, palms up, are held slightly apart as the fingers slide across the thumbs a few times. The visual of hands feeling the texture of cloth.
