Following Born is the ASL hand sign for Bake, which also uses a sliding motion under the opposite hand. In my past ASL lessons, I would keep mixing these two hand signs up, so I made sure they looked different in my book. Now the only cooking show I ever watched was the Muppet chef on Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show. I created a cartoon of his Swedish Chef (with thinner eyebrows) to illustrate the ASL hand sign for Bake. The Open hand, palm up, moves forward, sliding under the opposite hand, the visual of placing a tray into an oven. Repeating the hand sign changes its definition to mean Oven or Baking.
