Superstition has always favoured the Rabbit as Lucky. Folklore states that saying “Rabbit Rabbit” on the first of the month will bring Good Luck. In celebration of this tradition, I present the ASL hand signs for Rabbit.
On Page 27 in My ASL Dictionary, a little girl dressed for Easter with cute pink bunny ears shows the ASL hand sign for RABBIT and BUNNY.
Both U hands held back, bend at the knuckles twice like a curious rabbit’s ears.
To match the tradition of the Two Rabbits is another ASL hand sign for Rabbit, created after the Dictionary’s completion. Dressed in a Shower Robe with a Bunny Towel cap on his head, this gentleman shows a variant hand sign for Rabbit and Hare. Both handshapes for 13 are placed over each other as the extended fingers bend at the knuckles.
The initial fingerspelling bounces the letter B for its double letter. For fun, I have the words in English hop like a bunny into their position.
