My ASL Dictionary, Available Now, is filled with colourful characters, the most colourful being the clowns. Known for their kaleidoscope outfits and expressive faces, I eventually chose them as the representatives to illustrate the ASL hand signs for Emotions. Many of these hand signs have already appeared, Amazing, Excited, Tired, Sad, and Scared. With close to 60 clowns to choose from, I will post more of these emotional jesters in the following weeks. In the dictionary, they are unmoving pictures with instructions and direction arrows. Hopefully, when animated, their flamboyant outfits are not a distraction from the words they are signing. I begin the week with a simple clown to illustrate the ASL hand sign for CLOWN.
The Clawed Hand twists side to side over the nose, like putting on a big red clown nose (which is why this jester doesn’t have one). As Clowns are known for their antics, jokes, and tricks, I played with the finger spelling.
