THE HAT

Sitting squarely in the sunbelt of Canada, this Alberta prairie city basks in the sun for 300 days a year, making it the “sunniest place in Canada”.
Known as Medicine Hat and The Hat, there are multiple stories about the origin of this city’s name, a battle between the Blackfoot and the Cree, a legend involving love and human sacrifice, and even a landmark that looks like an Aboriginal headdress. The common link of all these tales is the headdress. Medicine Hat is also an English interpretation of Saamis (SA-MUS), the Blackfoot word for the eagle tail headdress worn by medicine men. Despite the warm weather in this city, I dressed my native medicine man in a light parka with a feather tail behind his cap to show the ASL hand sign. The animation shows the current Medicine Hat flag, while the cartoon’s parka contains the former blue flag that features the city’s namesake indigenous symbolism.
