Not every word in English has an ASL alternative. Metals are a good example. Copper, Bronze, Platinum, and Tin are all fingerspelled. This week ASL Word of the Day will cover the materials that do have ASL hand signs.
TINMAN
Instead of going with a superhero to represent the hand sign for Metal, Ore, and Steel, I went with the first famous metal man on the big screen, the Tinman from Wizard of Oz. This 2013 illustration was created before the dictionary was even an idea. The picture has only a head and a hand because its initial purpose was to be a hard copy for my ASL notes.
Tomorrow I will post an updated picture of this mechanical man.
