One of the biggest challenges in making a cartoon ASL dictionary was the illustration of the hands, one of the more difficult appendages to draw. While I was free to be creative with each character, their hands needed to show the correct hand shape, orientation, location, movement, and position for the ASL hand sign to be understood. A reader not understanding the hand sign, would be my fault. The ASL hand sign for Blame was tricky. Showing the right hand pushing forward over the left was hard to see with the character facing forward. To explain this in the dictionary, I needed to use a direction arrow with the instructions and hints. I’m happy the animation doesn’t require these extras.
