After a week of ASL Hand signs for Refreshments, the ASL Word of the Day will cover the various definitions of Break.
In planning the illustration for Intermission, I needed a worker to demonstrate it. With a dictionary filled with doctors, nurses, adventurers, suits, and clowns, I needed someone new. Then I read a news article on the training of Chinese flight attendants and how they would balance books and glass bottles on their heads for balance and posture and bite down on a Chopstick to perfect a gentle grin. Leaving out the balance exercises, I drew a stewardess with a bamboo chopstick between her teeth for this ASL hand sign. Animation allowed me to adjust her smile when she blinked.
