GET CRACKING

As an illustrator, I want each cartoon in my dictionary to have a distinct character and often draw inspiration wherever I can find it. Watching a scene from the 2017 film ‘The Shape of Water’ reminded me that EGG and MUTE were two more ASL signs missing from the dictionary. For MUTE, I drew a cartoon of the mute protagonist, Elisa Esposito. Instead of using the Amphibian creature for EGG, I thought it would be funnier to cartoon his actor in the motion capture suit (a choice that also made his hands easier to see). It is rare to see American Sign Language on television or on film, but viewing it there can be illuminating.
