As a cartoonist, I strive to put life and individuality into each cartoon. MY ASL DICTIONARY has many cartoon images of figures from deaf history but I also thought the book should include characters from the deaf community of the present. My ASL teachers had told me stories of their movie theatre experiences and the caption glasses they had to wear in the theatres as subtitles are never part of the film. So for the ASL hand sign for SKIP, I drew a deaf movie patron with his closed captioning glasses getting ready for the show but wanting to skip over the Coming Soon Ads that run first.
