In 2014, a year after starting this dictionary, my ASL class covered the chapter on Family terms. To keep these hand signs connected in the dictionary as they were in the textbook, I began to brainstorm on recognizable images attached to the family unit. I chose to make cartoons of the familiar royal family found in a playing card deck. Parents and Grandparents were Kings and Queens, Aunts and Uncles were the Dukes, Cousins, Nephews, and Nieces were both Aces with the Jokers, of course, were children. I also kept the playing card costume choice for the hand signs for Man and Woman. For Fun I shifted the 2022 upgrade backward (as it would be seen in fingerspelling).
